Happiness is in all of us if you look in the right places

Happiness is in all of us, you just need to know where to look.

There are days where I feel incredibly sad and flat. Previously to be being diagnosed, I would get stuck in a rabbit hole of trying to decode my already confusing emotions.

Now I have learned how to step back, breathe and observe my thoughts in a more practical way.

LOVE YOURSELF AND YOUR CONFIDENCE WILL GROW

This is why the practice of balancing your thoughts becomes so important. By challenging these unhelpful thoughts, you begin to train your brain to essentially become more reasonable which will lessen the intensity of anxiety over time.

Is this the happiness I’m referring to? Not quite. But it does lead to an inner peace of sorts which does in time boost happiness.

HAPPINESS IS IN ALL OF US

Think of something that makes you happy. It’s okay if you don’t feel happy if you’re reading this now. We all feel a little down sometimes. But the feeling passes.

Think of a time when you were happy. Focus on the memory and in as much detail as you can. It could be as simple as a day at the beach, the sand between your toes and the sun gently tingling your skin.

DON’T BE SCARED OF YOUR EMOTIONS

You can’t force yourself to feel emotions, they just come to you. It’s why music is so powerful, and is able to take your memory back to a place it affected you most, storing a range of emotions from happiness, to sadness, to anger and heartbreak.

Emotions will come and go but it’s how you handle the thoughts that come with those emotions that matter most.

I promise you, it will and can get better. Talk to a friend, a family member, or better yet see a Doctor or a Psychologist. A professional will be able to get you onto a personalised treatment plan.

You’re not alone, there are many people that feel the same way as you do. Happiness can sometimes be elusive, but just like a game of hide and seek as a child, it can always be found again.

If you or anyone you know is experiencing distress you can reach out to Beyond Blue: Beyond Blue’s support line is available 24/7.
